The President congratulated the Hungarian leader on National Day

Sunday, October 23, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to President Pál Schmitt of the Republic of Hungary on the 55th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution.

"It was exactly 55 years ago that the Hungarian people stood up in a brave but unequal struggle for their country's freedom and independence. Their fight stands as a twentieth century symbol representing the cause of liberty and democracy as well as a source of inspiration for other nations living in totalitarian oppression," the President wrote in her message of congratulations.

According to the President, after more than four decades of a divided Europe, Central and Eastern European nations reclaimed their sovereignty and freedom. Having condemned the crimes committed by totalitarian regimes, many of them are now building a secure, strong and united Europe.
