President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Lithuania’s defense attachés to discuss issues related to defense and security in their operational regions as well as military and political cooperation plans and prospects. They also discussed plans of Lithuania’s defense structures for the coming year, and activities within NATO and with partners. President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė says the decision taken by the European Council to amend the EU Treaty to provide for the establishment of a permanent support mechanism for crisis-stricken eurozone countries is very important for Lithuania. “Yesterday and today the European Council discussed very serious issues relevant for the future of the eurozone and the whole European Union. We, representatives of all countries, agreed that the EU Treaty must be amended in order to be able to set up a support mechanism for countries in financial difficulty. This is important not only to the eurozone but also to other countries of the EU, including Lithuania,” President Dalia Grybauskaitė said. European leaders agreed on the need to amend the EU Treaty to allow for the establishment of a permanent stability mechanism to be used to rescue struggling countries of the eurozone by helping them stabilize their financial systems. “Amendments to the Treaty are important for all countries of the European Union, not just the eurozone. For Lithuania, too. No Member State is immune to financial difficulties in the future; therefore, all of them are interested in having a clearly-defined rescue mechanism,” says President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė attending the European Council meeting in Brussels.
