President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė had an audience with Pope Benedict XVI in Rome. The President thanked the Holy See for the policy of non-recognition of Lithuania's annexation in the years of Soviet occupation and reiterated Lithuania's previous invitation for the Holy Father to visit our country. “Pope Benedict XVI of Rome thinks about Lithuania, sends season’s greetings and blesses all Lithuanian people. I am happy this message comes at this particular time, the season of Advent, and I am happy to be able to pass it over to our people,” President Dalia Grybauskaitė said. Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania, which takes over OSCE Chairmanship from Kazakhstan next year, closed the two-day OSCE Summit in Astana. “We, OSCE countries, have a very clear goal – to build a strong and efficient security community built on democratic principles; therefore, during its chairmanship of this Organization, Lithuania will be actively seeking to reduce bureaucratic procedures in the Organization, enhance coordination of actions among member states and with other international organizations and take more concrete steps,” President of the Republic of Lithuania said. The United Nations unanimously adopted a resolution initiated by Lithuania concerning international cooperation and exchange of information on sea-dumped chemical weapons and their environmental impact. The need for the resolution was first voiced by President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė at the Baltic Sea Action Summit this past February in Helsinki, and the draft proposal for resolution was presented at the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. At the OSCE Summit, President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė met with President of the Kyrgyz Republic Roza Otunbayeva for a bilateral discussion. The President said after the meeting that the Kyrgyz President was interested in Lithuania’s euro-integration experience and in the possibility to enhance cooperation with Lithuania in all areas – from trade and economic relations to inter-parliamentary cooperation. President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė attending OSCE Summit in Astana had a conversation with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. As part of the OSCE Summit in Kazakhstan’s capital city Astana, President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev. As Lithuania is taking over OSCE Chairmanship from Kazakhstan next year, leaders of both states discussed priorities of this Organization, also the development of bilateral relations and the outlook for the whole region. In the framework of the Summit of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė had a bilateral meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon. The President underlined in the meeting that further reform of the OSCE will be the primary task for Lithuania as it takes over chairmanship of this organization from Kazakhstan next year. In the framework of the OSCE Summit in Kazakhstan’s capital city Astana, President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė had bilateral meetings with the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev, and President of the Kyrgyz Republic Roza Otunbayeva. |
