Lithuania and Latvia to stand united in negotiations on a new EU financial framework

Friday, December 2, Estonia - President Dalia Grybauskaitė, currently attending the meeting of the Baltic Presidents, discussed with President Andris Bērziņš of Latvia the issues of bilateral cooperation, the situation in the eurozone, and the likely impact of the crisis on the economy of the Baltic countries. The leaders of Lithuania and Latvia also talked about the measures intended to enhance the supervision of financial institutions.

The Presidents stressed that cooperation between the two countries was tight and that common interests were pursued both in negotiating on a new EU financial perspective and in promoting cooperation with Nordic countries.

"Lithuania and Latvia can only defend their interests through acting together and coordinating their actions in negotiations on a new EU financial framework. The people of our countries have always been and will remain connected by fraternal ties, and dealing with new challenges will further promote cooperation," Dalia Grybauskaitė said.

Discussing the prospects for further cooperation the Presidents emphasized that it was important to strengthen economic integration, to achieve the ending of energy isolation, and to ensure regional security.

The Latvian President reiterated his support for the Visaginas nuclear power plant project and other energy projects.
