President Dalia Grybauskaitė left for New York to attend the General Debate of the 66th Session of the United Nations General Assembly which this year had the theme “The Role of Mediation in the Settlement of Disputes by Peaceful Means”. After completing her working visit to Germany, President Dalia Grybauskaitė arrived on a three day state visit in Iceland where she met with Icelandic leaders. She also visited the historic Hofdi House, which had a deep symbolic meaning for Lithuania since it was namely there that the agreements reestablishing diplomatic relations between the three Baltic States and Iceland were signed. Dalia Grybauskaitė presented the Honorary Consul of Lithuania, Professor Arnor Hannibalson, with a Lithuanian state decoration. President Dalia Grybauskaitė had a meeting with German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel in Magdeburg. They discussed the economic and financial situation in the European Union and the implementation of energy projects important for Lithuania and Europe. During their bilateral meeting, Angela Merkel assured the President once again, like she did a year ago when she visited Lithuania, that Germany understood very well Lithuania’s aspirations for energy security. President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with the President of Parliament and Acting President of Moldova, Marian Lupu, and Prime Minister Vlad Filat to discuss bilateral relations, cooperation between Moldova and the European Union, Moldova's progress in implementing fundamental domestic structural reforms, and possible ways of resolving the protracted conflict in Transnistria. Invited by German President Christian Wulf, President Dalia Grybauskaitė visited Berlin, after which she went to Brussels to attend a two-day meeting of the European Council. In their bilateral meeting German President Christian Wulf and President Grybauskaitė discussed energy security, bilateral cooperation and EU financial policy issues. President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves in Tartu to discuss issues of topical concern for Lithuania and Estonia: energy and cyber security as well as ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the region, the European Union and NATO. "The successful development of the Baltic States and regional economic growth is possible only by ensuring energy and cyber security; therefore, we have to be adequately prepared to respond to new threats," the President said during the meeting. President Dalia Grybauskaitė went on a working visit to Warsaw to attend the 17th Meeting of Presidents of Central European States. The purpose of the meeting was to make an overview of political transformations and democratic changes that took place in Central Europe over the past 20 years, to share European integration experience, and to discuss the European neighborhood policy. President Dalia Grybauskaitė as head of the OSCE Chairing State visited the South Caucasus countries – Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia – and met with their leaders: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Artur Rasizade, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, and Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan. President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė made a one-day working visit to Vienna. In the Austrian capital, the President visited the head office of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), where she addressed OSCE Permanent Council and met with OSCE Secretary General Marc Perrin de Brichambaut. During the visit, the President also met with Austrian President Heinz Fisher and Chancellor Werner Faymann. |
