SpeechesToday, on Statehood Day, we see history and modern times merge together. Centuries ago on July 6, Lithuania was crowned and elevated to freedom. The nation that King Mindaugas started to unify came together through the efforts of many generations on the path leading to this day. The journey was long and difficult. It was full of challenges and losses, victories and defeats, painful memories and high expectations. I welcome all of you who have come to Lithuania to attend the closing event of Lithuania's presidency of the Community of Democracies. In 1990 Lithuania regained independence and set the course to building a strong democratic state. After two decades of hard and committed work on this path, in 2009, Lithuania was entrusted with the presidency of the Community of Democracies which unites over 100 countries of the world. It is an honor for me to welcome all of you here in Vilnius for the high level meeting „Women Enhancing Democracy: Best Practices“. This meeting is high level not only because so many inspiring women political leaders, members of the Council of World Women Leaders, are present, but because all of us – political activists, members of NGOs, university academics, business owners, artists and visionaries, are high level experts in our fields. It is a great pleasure to welcome all of you who have gathered here from the three Baltic States: splendid singers, magnificent dancers, excellent musicians, and the entire Baltic student community - a community that is forever young and free. And the motto that you have chosen for the festival is not accidental - UPSTREAM! We are here at Vilnius University to pay tribute to Czesław Miłosz, a prominent citizen of the world, a law student and graduate of this university, a laureate of the Nobel Prize for Literature, a towering poet and prose writer. I would like to highlight the continued impact of his work and ideas on the present day. Czesław Miłosz - a great son of Lithuania and Poland whose centenary we are celebrating today - believed himself to be "the last citizen of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania". Mr. President of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary, Distinguished Participants and Guests of the General Assembly Meeting, I am delighted to have the opportunity to welcome all of you at this high-level forum. This is the first time that such a large and important meeting of the representatives of European independent judiciary councils is held in Lithuania. 2011-06-07 State of the Nation Address by H.E. Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania
Dear Fellow People of Lithuania, Distinguished Participants of the Parliamentary Sitting, I am very much delighted to have the opportunity to once again address you. I view the annual address, which is a moment of special importance to me, not only as a constitutional duty, but first and foremost as an opportunity for all us to take a moment, to pause in our daily routine of problems, conflicts and scandals, and to speak about the issues that can shape the environment for our today and our children’s tomorrow. Your Majesties, Your Royal Highnesses, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen! I am very pleased to be visiting your beautiful country. It offers an exceptional opportunity to consolidate cooperation ties between Norway and Lithuania and to open the doors of friendship between our two nations even wider. I want to thank you so much for your hospitality. 2011-04-04 Message of Congratulations to the Joint Baltic American National Committee on its 50th Anniversary
I extend my sincere congratulations to all of you on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Joint Baltic American National Committee. The Joint Baltic American National Committee, uniting the Baltic communities in the United States, was established at a time when the occupied Baltic countries needed it the most. In order to foster innovations and economic growth in the EU, we have to put aside stereotypes and fill the gender gaps. There are three main issues that I want to put up for the discussions: First, an integrated approach regarding gender gaps is needed at the EU level. |
