Address by H.E. Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania, at the State Awards Ceremony
Dear Participants and Guests of the State Awards Ceremony,
On this day of great importance to the nation, which marks the coronation of Lithuania, we have gathered here to honor prominent Lithuanian and foreign nationals who have made a significant contribution to raising civic awareness, spreading scientific thought, expanding the ideals of arts and humanity, and establishing the name of Lithuania in the world.
Building the state is a never ending process. It reflects not only the past, but also the endeavors of today, bringing the historically remote birth of our nation and the joy and meaning of its creation closer to our hearts.
You offer us yet another opportunity to put ourselves and our civic mind to the test of time. Your example makes us raise our standards higher and higher. You encourage us to action and new paths because your work creates a human person who is nobler, better and more committed spiritually. Your talent, devotion and determination make our nation stronger and more dynamic.
Your accomplishments promote Lithuania around the world. It is only through the promotion of democratic values and creative potential that Lithuania reveals itself as an open, modern and tolerant state.
Today we also honor those who, disregarding their own safety, rushed to help others and displayed courage and bravery in protecting human life - the most precious asset of all. A life saved is a universe and tomorrow saved. For this, I thank you most humbly and sincerely.
I invite all those awarded today to continue making our state and its people stronger, both spiritually and morally, to impart hope and meaning to our aspirations and to bring us together on the path towards tomorrow.
I extend my greetings to you all on Statehood Day and the 600th Anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald. I wish you courage, resolve and lasting enthusiasm.
Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania
